Echoes From a Diary — Part I
These words are taken from one of my old journals.
I wrote without pause until the pen could write no more. What follows is a fragment from one of the most complex and transformative chapters of my life.
A piece of my heart. A whisper of my soul. A little therapy session with myself. Originally written in Dutch, translated into English.
For six months, there was only silence.
Unresolved. No explanations.
Just the weight of everything we had left unspoken.
Until I was the one who broke the quiet.
Because in your final letter before we parted,
you had written:
“This is not the end.
It is only a comma.”
And I held onto those words.
I kept believing there was still something waiting for us.
I thought we would finally sit with the ruins of us—
speak of what we had lost,
what remained,
what could still be rebuilt.
But when we met again,
the story was not about us.
It was about you.
Your victories.
Your transformation.
The person you had become.
You stayed that weekend.
Something that was never meant to happen
somehow happened anyway.
You even brought clean clothes with you—
as if you already knew you would not leave that night.
Deep down, I knew something was wrong.
The signs were there, quietly waiting to be seen.
But I only looked for the things that confirmed my hope.
I only saw what I longed to be true.
Hope is a beautiful illusion.
It turns warnings into whispers
and red flags into shadows.
I didn’t see what was there.
I saw what I needed to see.
Love had blinded me.
Or perhaps I had blinded myself,
because seeing the truth meant letting go.
After that,
you wrote me another letter.
You said seeing me again felt effortless,
that the old magic had survived,
still waiting beneath the silence—
as though nothing between us had ever broken.
Then you spoke of what we are now:
a love that is free, free from titles;
a distance that has somehow pulled us closer;
a freedom that, you said, is good for us.
But before the ink had time to dry,
you undid your own confession.
You said we cannot be together.
That growth asks for solitude.
That love is not enough when two people are still becoming themselves.
And yet,
you began describing the life you long for—
the house filled with morning light,
the quiet evenings,
the future that feels soft around the edges.
Without hesitation,
you placed me inside that vision.
“And I think you belong in that picture.”
I could almost see us there.
Then, with the gentlest sentence,
you took me out of it again.
“Whether we end up there together… we cannot know.”
As if I were welcome in your dream,
but never truly chosen in your reality.
And at the end, you offered the line that lingered longest:
“With me, you will always have a place to call home.”
A strange kind of home—
one I am invited to remember,
but never promised I may keep.
You gave me a future with one hand
and uncertainty with the other,
until your words became a tide:
pulling me close,
only to carry me away again.
You told me I was still part of your future,
then reminded me not to expect one.
You offered certainty in one sentence,
and took it back in the next.
You called me home,
while keeping the door closed.
A home with no doorway.
A future with no promise.
A love that speaks in circles.
Amid all the contradictions,
I saw only one thing:
that you wanted me there.
So I went.
I surrendered to the hope of us.
And you let me.
And so, the journey began with my disappearance, long before my departure.
Thank you for reading.
Some stories are not written to give answers.
They are written so the echoes no longer have to live in silence.
If these words resonated with you, I’d love for you to stay.

He didn't offer her a future.
He offered her
the description of one —
close enough to feel warm
before he put it away.

So very beautiful. The words, ‘As if I were welcome in your dream, but never truly chosen in your reality’, stayed with me. I have felt the pain of this. Thank you so much for sharing this part of yourself. Truly beautiful ✨🙏
